Are we too immature to be civilized by ............

Yet another Wesak day is over. People couldn’t enjoy Wesak as they used to do.  Huge pandals were erected in cities and the suburb, alms halls inviting people to eat and drink free of charge,  and visiting temples in faraway cities in lorries and tractors were not to be seen .   The crisis that the country suffers now has robbed of the happiness associated with the festival.

 Words have lost their meaning. Wesak too is not an exception. Wesak  is to commemorate not only the birth , the   enlightenment and the passing away of Lord Buddha  but also to revisit the code of conduct that his philosophy communicates. We,as Sri Lankans, appear to be immature in understanding what the Buddha has taught, for we haven’t yet been able to renounce primitive thoughts that we nurture with zest.

  Frugality is a value shared in Buddhism . Simple living and high thinking too are values embedded into it. Integrity leading to profound thinking is another principle stressed.

These values are there in the scripture, Priests in numerous preaching sessions verbalize such values.  Devotees who are not slumbering nod their heads in approval. Rarely do they incorporate these values into their day-to-day living. Practicing such values cannot be seen in governance too

Rulers of the country are not righteous. No ruler, according to the media,is free from corruption. They defy the very people who elected them to be rulers. Poor people, elements of a vicious circle, are in the custody of a gang of thieves.

Had the country cherished Buddhist values sincerely, we wouldn’t have suffered the crisis fathered by  sheer mismanagement of the state.

 

 

තවත් වෙසක් දිනයක් අවසන්. මිනිසුන්ට වෙනදා මෙන් වෙසක් භුක්ති විඳීමට නොහැකි විය. නගරවල සහ තදාසන්න ප්‍රදේශවල ඉදිකරන ලද දැවැන්ත තොරණ, නොමිලේ කන්න බොන්න ආරාධනා කරන දාන ශාලා, ලොරිවලින් ට්‍රැක්ටර්වලින් ඈත නගරවල පන්සල්වලට යන එන ඒවා දකින්න ලැබුණේ නැහැ. දැන් රට විඳිමින් සිටින අර්බුදය උත්සවය හා බැඳුණු සතුට පැහැරගෙන ඇත.

 වචනවල අර්ථය නැති වී ඇත. වෙසක් උත්සවයේ ද අර්ථය හැලී ඇත වෙසක් උත්සවය ද . වසක් යනු බුදුරදුන්ගේ උපත, බුදු බව ලබා ගැනීම සහ පිරිනිවන් පෑම පමණක් නොව උන්වහන්සේගේ දර්ශනය සන්නිවේදනය කරන චර්යාධර්ම සංග්‍රහය නැවත සිහිපත් කිරීමයි. ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයන් වශයෙන් අප බුදුන් දෙසූ දේ අවබෝධ කර ගැනීමට නොමේරූ බව පෙනේ, මන්ද අප උනන්දුවෙන් පෝෂණය කරන ප්‍රාථමික සිතුවිලි අත්හැරීමට අපට තවමත් නොහැකි වී ඇත.

 . අරපිරිමැස්ම බුද්ධාගමේ ඇති වටිනාකමකි උසස් චින්තනයකින් යුත් සරල ජීවිතයක්. ද එහි ගැබ් වී ඇත. .
