Self-study skills and online
education
There are many problems with the
online education system which is now the only option for school education. The
only thing children lose being away
from the school physically is the students’' integration with the school and
the surrounding environment. Apart from this, there is not much difference
between online education and the education offered by the school. In the
classroom, the teacher lectures on the subject. It is seldom that teachers
recognize the learner diversity and direct the teaching pattern to suit that
diversity. Monitoring the learning
teaching process attending to individual needs does not happen to the optimum
level. Teaching using audio - visual equipment is also rare.
This Covid ridden
context is a valuable opportunity to
impart self-study skills to the child in an environment where there is no
properly conducted online education and no teacher guidance.
Self-study
skills
Self-study is the process of listening to a lecture and
understanding the facts, reading a book and understanding its content, being
sensitive to the environment and understanding what it feels like, and
discovering by the student the sources for learning the subjects. Skills are
required to master self-study. Online education can be used to impart
self-study skills to the students.
Listening
skills
Here are some listening skills that can be useful for a
student.
The ability to listen
to a discourse and understand the specifics of that discourse,
Ability to understand the essence of a lecture,
The ability to understand the details of a lecture are some
of them.
Reading
skills
The ability to read
and understand is also a skill to be acquired. The child should be taught how
to line things up in a textbook or other source, the different sentence
patterns used, the ability to read fast and the ability to read a text for detail are too important .
Note taking
skills
The student is accustomed to writing down what the teacher
says. The child is not given the skills to paraphrase a lecture or something
written in a book. Graphical notes are quickly embedded in the child's
short-term memory. If done, the child can become an independent learner. The
ministry of education has planned to launch 6 channels to make online education
accessible to all which indeed is a good move. There are two things that the
ministry should do prior to launch the channels. First is to train teachers to
the online mode. Enriching pupils with self-study skills making use of online
platform is the second essential requirement.
