Online
teaching
Online teaching,
though not a new strategy in tertiary education has become a widely used new
mode of teaching strategy today in Sri Lankan schools.
Time to eliminate the
pandemic from the world is indefinite and, therefore, the inevitable choice is
to live with it. Online teaching will continue to have its say in the
learning-teaching process so long as the Pandemic frightens us with its
presence. The challenge, therefore, is to design a quality online teaching
mechanism. The objective of this article is to study the status of online
education in Sri Lankan schools.
Challenges
in online education
Online education at
school level emerged at a time when the system was not prepared for it, giving
rise to a lot of challenges for school managers, teachers, pupils and parents.
Teachers, not been adequately trained for the new mode, keep applying the
traditional classroom teaching model, lecture method accompanied by chalk and
talk method, even in teaching online, the digital platform. Some teachers, in
the meantime, do not have adequate knowledge and skills about the novel and
innovative techniques in handling the computer or the mobile phone in
delivering lessons. Some schools can afford to supply the teachers with
computers and some can’t. Schools without computers resort to the use of mobile
phones. In a preliminary study done with an available sample of schools, it was
revealed that there was a disparity in the training given to the teachers on
online teaching. No island-wide or provincial mechanism was found on teacher
training in the context specified here. . A few isolated initiatives taken to
this effect was found ineffective.
Learner
challenges
Poor reception of
signals, non-availability of laptops or mobile phones, inability to spend money
on buying data are some of the problems that the learners face in online
education. This problem becomes serious in the case of families where there are
many school going children using phones simultaneously in learning. The lecture
delivered by the teacher gets interrupted due to unstable internet connectivity
. The learner who loses words, fragments and sentences in the delivery fails to
comprehend the lesson being delivered. Visuals presented along with the lessons
(if any) in mobile phones whose screen is narrow and resolution is poor are
mostly of poor quality. Opportunities for the learner to get what they missed
clarified are rare or minimum. Monitoring the learner and evaluating learner
performances based on their feedback formatively is not possible in this mode.
Parents and
caretakers
Income
distribution in Sri Lanka is becoming wide resulting in a wide gap between
haves and have-nots. Making any intervention in the poor reception of signals
is something beyond parents’ involvement. Their job is to buy and provide data
for their children. Many parents with more than one child find it difficult to
buy data for their children. Teachers, even at the university level, complain
that the learner participation in online lessons is not satisfactory. Even the
learners who take part in lessons, it has been observed, drop the platform
before the lesson is over. The tragedy is that all these learner types are
expected to appear for examinations designed by one central authority.
Restructuring online
education
A simple survey into
the online teaching in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia and India
reveal that the challenges they face in implementing online education at school
level are almost similar to ours. Found two research done in Bangladesh and
Malaysia aiming at ensuring the quality of online education. Some
recommendations are applicable to our context too.
Ensuring high-speed
internet facility has been a must in delivering a quality input to the learner,
Poor reception and constant interruptions in online lessons due to the poor
reception may demotivate and distract the learner in participating in online
lessons.
Designing
learner-friendly lessons taking into consideration the learner profiles of
privileged and less privileged learners, their environmental and emotional
factors also are necessary when ensuring a quality delivery.
In some countries in
our region, as revealed in a simple survey done by the writer, delivering
online lessons appears to be more systematic. Assigning the learners with
“preparation activities”, not limiting only to sending the online time table in
advance has been an interesting practice. The prior preparation creates a
readiness in the learner which is an essential requirement for learning.
Instead of
delivering online lessons, uploading well-designed lessons in digital platforms
like the Utube is identified to be a better practice.
The potential of
public media in enhancing the quality of online education should be
investigated into ensuring a quality online education for all learners. A team
of ICT experts can be hired island-wide in teacher training. Media, TV and
radio, in particular, can be utilized in making the stakeholders aware of
issues such as safety and safeguarding measures, in virtual learning tools.
Designing self-learning
packages in print targeting the learning outcomes stipulated in syllabi and
making them available for the learners can minimize problems in online teaching
and learning
It is high time for the
authorities concerned to do an impact study on online education.
